A life in photographs.

Soohyun began photographing in Korea as a teenager. For nearly three decades, he has made portraits alongside his own photographic art, carrying that practice into every studio session.

In 2017, while taking over Chicago Baby, he photographed his sons Ian and Sean. Their portraits still hang in the studio. As a father, he understands why families return to photographs as the years change.

Soohyun's independent work explores place, labor and belonging. His photographs have been exhibited at Silver Eye Center for Photography, Gallery 400 and 6018North.

In 2017, he received the Silver Eye Fellowship 18 International Award.

Soohyun has taught photography and visual communication at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Saint Xavier University and Trinity International University.

At gugwa, a portrait begins with the person in front of the camera. Soohyun's work across art, teaching and commissioned photography shapes the studio's approach to light, direction and the final image. His team works within the studio practice he has built; the photographer for each session is confirmed when you book.

Some clients first come for a wedding portrait, then return with a baby or a larger family. Photographing them again is a chance to see what has changed and what they want to remember now.

Gugwa (九果) means “nine fruits.” The studio brings Soohyun's years with Studio Soo and Chicago Baby into one place for individuals, couples and families of many backgrounds.
